This is the adjudicated vehicle through which Lassonde School of Engineering dispenses the YUFA Junior Faculty/Librarian Fund (JFF) (per YUFA article 19.29 (b)). The fund is granted once annually to support research by junior (untenured) Faculty members. All grants are adjudicated by the PARR - Grant Adjudication Cyclical Committee.
GUIDELINES
JFF is available to assist untenured faculty members with seed funding, pilot projects, limited emergency support, research travel (excluding conference travel, see Article 19.29 (C) of YUFA agreement), laboratory equipment, and student support. JFF may be allocated for the following types of research projects:
- Emergency funding for projects that have been funded but have additional or unexpected costs (fluctuating exchange rates, changes in manufacturing, etc.)
- Pilot studies for new ideas with the goal of future funding to be applied for
- Project management/coordinator costs for managing large-scale grants and projects.
- Equipment Funding: specifically funding for specialized equipment that might be hard to acquire through regular funding.
- Top-up funding/leveraging funding for large-scale grants such as CFI JELF, CFI IF, etc.
- Funding for projects/Faculty members who have lost their major funding sources or are trying to restart research activities after no external funding.
ELIGIBILITY
- All junior full-time faculty members and librarians in the Lassonde School of Engineering who are in the probationary/untenured or continuing appointment classifications are eligible.
- One award per year per eligible faculty member.
- Each faculty member can apply individually or as part of the team in a funding cycle for JFF, but not both.
o Team applications are eligible for consideration if all applicants are YUFA Faculty affiliated with Lassonde. Team applications should indicate how the awarded funds should be divided among the applicants.
VALUE
Historically, the average amount granted for the fund was in the range of $500-$1,000. Funding available for 2025 is $20,000 to be allocated as per requests and the number of applications.
DEADLINE
Applications are due September 1, 2025.
The application form questions require details on the project and the budget. No document upload is necessary.
EVALUATION PROCESS
Projects will be evaluated based on the need and urgency of the request.
The submitted applications will be reviewed by the Research Support Office for completeness followed by review by the PARR-Grant Adjudication Cyclical Committee with a recommendation to the Associate Dean of Research Innovation, Enterprise and Partnerships, and the Dean.
The funding will be transferred in November/December.
